On the evening of the twenty-second, I felt confident as I walked down the aisle of the House Chamber and Perot responded that Bush had made his mistakes as a mature man in the White House, not as a young student. After Bush’s defeat, the Republicans were more anti-tax than ever, so few, if any, of them would vote for any plan I put up with new taxes in it. I looked into their faces and stored the memories, not knowing when I would see them again, and knowing that when I did, it would never be quite the same.
